Description
Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Mobility driver (MOB) is responsible for transporting patients to and from hospitals, nursing homes, doctor appointments and private residences. The Mobility driver will complete and obtain signatures for transport for each patient on their run sheet and deliver any face sheets obtained from a medical facility to Butler Medical Transport home office. While transporting in a BMT vehicle, the Mobility driver will abide by all local, state and federal traffic laws.
Requirements and Qualifications
Graduation from high school or equivalent
Must be at least 19 years old or older at the time of hire for insurance purposes
Will have a valid driver’s license
Has a current healthcare provider level CPR certification from the AHA
Has or is able to obtain a PSC certification
Ability to work in a busy, high-stress environment.
Ability to comprehend or learn department practices, rules and regulations.
Ability to operate and text on a cellular phone.
Ability to operate computers.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
Ability to think and react quickly and effectively to tense situations.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to recall details from numerous informational resources.
Ability to prioritize decisions based upon multiple criteria and identifiable standards of policies and procedures.
Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
Arrive at work in uniform.
Pass background investigation.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, and all subsequent random or for cause drug screening
Job Duties
General Driver Safety and Maintenance
Daily Unit Check Sheets
Will know what fluids their units uses and where and when to add and report maintenance issues
Oil, gas or diesel, washer fluid, power steering fluid, antifreeze, brake fluids are topped off
Wheelchair Lift
Door opens and closes
Lift operates
Account for 1 wheelchair, all 4 straps for wheelchair are accounted for, 1 complete seatbelt set (Lap and shoulder restraints) for wheelchair patient and lap belt or shoulder harness for all other seats on the van (4-8 people depending on which van you are driving)
Exterior
Check all tires, hub caps, internal and external lights work (including signals and flashers), note body dents and cleanliness
Interior
Emergency brake, wipers, horn, gages, heater/defroster/AC seats and handrails and all mirrors work
Emergency Equipment
First Aid Kit, fire extinguisher, accident packet and emergency reflectors are accounted for
Abide by ALL posted speed limits and local traffic laws to include the responsibility of their passengers and patients
Update dispatch via text or phone call when enroute/arrived/transporting/clear etc.
Notifies dispatch when they are available, out of service, on scene, at scene more than 20 minutes and give reason why
All ambulatory patients must wear their seat belts
If any ambulatory patient requires the use of the lift, they must sit in a wheelchair to go in and out of the van with the aid off the lift
If the patient is already in a wheelchair, they must be properly loaded in the van using the lift and restrained in the vehicle with 4 floor restraints, as well as a complete seat belt (lap belt and shoulder belt)
No one is allowed to stand on the lift at any time!!!
Clean, sweep and remove any trash that your van may have collected throughout the day
Wash the van if the weather permits
Place all your paper work (manifest, wheelchair run reports, authorization forms, face sheets...etc.) in the blue bin next to the printer/scanner in the crew room
A driver will never take a wheelchair up or down any stairs
Runs
Wheelchair calls from nursing homes:
Complete the run sheet and obtain the proper signatures for billing and transport
Receive face sheets if applicable and deliver to BMT office
Wheelchair calls from hospitals:
Receive the discharge packet from the nurse at the discharging hospital and deliver to receiving facility
Complete the wheelchair run report and receive a face sheet
Obtain all signatures required on the authorization form.
For all transports you must record your starting and ending mileage. Contact dispatch when you arrive, transport, at destination and clear each patient. As well if at any time you're held up in traffic and is running late, or a patient isn't ready. Communication with dispatch is the key to a successful day.
Patient Assistance
If a patient is ambulatory, meaning they are able to walk on and off the vehicle, they may use a cane or walker or you may provide some assistance.
A patient may bring onto the van a self-regulated O2 container and must be properly secured in the van
The driver will not assist a patient in or out of a wheelchair
Get fuel at the end of each shift every day!!
Beginning Shift
Verify all information including all addresses for pickups and drop offs
Fill out a mobility check sheet, scan it and email it to the mobility station supervisor then place it in the black bin.
During Shift
Write start mileage and end mileage for each run in the comments section of the exact run you are currently making
Do not take non-patients as passengers
End of Shift
Make sure vehicle is clean and refueled for next day/driver following the BMT check sheet
