Description

Overview Do you have progressive field inspection experience across transportation and building projects and enjoy coordinating with contractors, agencies, and clients while keeping projects on track and well-documented? MBP is looking for a Construction Inspector II to support field compliance, quality assurance, and documentation on active construction projects. Ideal candidates bring demonstrated growth in responsibility inspecting similar work and are ready to represent MBP in daily interactions with contractors, agencies, and project stakeholders. Responsibilities What You'll Do: Serve as a key MBP representative on active construction sites, verifying conformance with specifications and codes while supporting quality assurance and progress monitoring. Coordinate with agency personnel, contractors, and MBP team members to address discrepancies and recommend corrective actions. Exercise sound judgment in documenting project activities and advising on field issues that affect schedule, budget targets, and compliance. Support development of pay applications and contribute to project record strategies and reporting approaches. Work independently with periodic guidance from senior engineers or project leaders as scope and complexity increase. Responsibilities include: Perform field checks of red-line as-built plans to verify completeness of the plans. Conduct on-site field compliance inspection, quality assurance, and progress monitoring for conformance to specifications and codes at various construction projects. Develop payment applications. Verify that maintenance and new construction conform to contracts, plans, specifications, approved shop drawings, approved material lists, and permit requirements; communicate discrepancies to contractors and advise on actions to meet requirements. Perform required materials testing. Perform basic to moderate surveying and take measurements to check line, grade, and dimensions of roadway and structural elements; advise contractors of discrepancies. Communicate effectively and professionally with agency, contractor, and MBP personnel. Perform final inspection, prepare punchlists, and verify punchlist items are completed or corrected by the contractor. Maintain project records, including daily diaries documenting contractor work (locations of work, workforce, equipment, materials), project photos, and inspection reports; incorporate algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and associated sketches as needed. Track submittals and requests for information and maintain project correspondence. Perform administrative duties required of MBP team members. Inspect grading projects, paving projects, demolitions projects, special design bridge projects, signal projects, signing projects, coating projects, utility projects, and other special projects as assigned. Research proper inspection and construction methods to prepare for inspection requirements. Review performance of, and assist in the oversight, training, and development of Inspector I, Inspector Trainee, and Interns/Co-ops; provide daily advising of necessary corrective actions to support teamwork, partnering, and project success. Review and/or prepare daily reports for entries to the project diary, as-built plans, materials books, and work books. Prepare and check construction project reports and monthly project estimates; make corrections and forward to appropriate parties. Assist in constructability and biddability reviews. Monitor project budget and schedules. Assist in contractor’s monthly evaluations. Provide customer service and courteous communication to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and other project stakeholders. Complete administrative tasks including daily timesheets, monthly expense reports, and monthly mileage reports. Obtain training and professional development and participate in marketing introductions, including professional association involvement. Participate in shortlist interviews as requested. Perform limited project management responsibilities when assigned. Coordinate, monitor, and manage all inspection activities on a project when requested. Actively participate in company activities, including branch and company meetings. Obtain and maintain intermediate to advanced training and certifications. Maintain certifications required to inspect the assigned work. Perform duties of Construction Inspector I as needed. Who We Are Looking For Experience: Progressive experience inspecting construction work activities of similar type to assigned projects, demonstrating increasing responsibility. Experience across sectors such as federal, municipal, K-12 school, higher education, transportation, and ports or marina projects. Background monitoring and inspecting multiple construction operations including buildings, highways, roads, or bridges. Exposure to DOT-specific and horizontal construction environments, including grading, paving, demolitions, special design bridge projects, signal projects, signing projects, coating projects, and utility projects. Qualifications Education/Knowledge: High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED); or significant years of experience in engineering, architecture, or a skilled craft in the construction industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Working mathematics including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric computations based on field measurements. Construction-related training and experience demonstrating ability to perform duties. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, email, internet navigation, web-based tools, and specialized equipment. Client or MBP construction management information systems such as AWP, SiteManager, HICAM, or MBP’s OnTrack system, or ability to learn within one month of hire. Construction and inspection materials, methods, and tools utilized in construction, repair, or renovation work being monitored and inspected. Multiple construction operations and associated field practices. Preferred Certifications: OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification (required or obtained within 3 months of hire). Certification(s) from at least one or more of the following: State DOT (as appropriate), WACEL, ICC, NICET, CMAA, NACE, or MARTCP. Certifications preferred for horizontal construction (as appropriate for the DOT-specific project): Soil, Aggregate, Asphalt, Concrete, Nuclear Testing, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Traffic Control, and E & S Control. Additional certifications preferred: Certified Construction Manager (CCM); Construction Manager in Training (CMIT). Skills and Abilities: Independently implement quality control procedures. Understand and track project schedules. Collect, analyze, and interpret statistical data. Provide technical supervision, leadership, and training to other inspectors. Identify potential problems and derive recommended solutions from past experiences. Use computers (including Microsoft Office) and specialized equipment. Read and interpret construction plans and contract specifications for assigned inspection work. Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments. Communicate inspection issues effectively and responsibly (verbal and written) with contractors, owners, subcontractors, and team members. Use surveying and measurement tools effectively for inspection duties (e.g., survey levels, transits, four-foot levels, lock levels, measuring tapes, measuring wheels, straight edges, and other tools as necessary). Obtain and maintain industry certifications specific to assigned duties. Stand and sit as needed on project work sites; climb ladders; work at heights; and work outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions. Safely navigate construction work sites with uneven terrain. Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Travel and drive regularly. Guidance/Responsibility: Assignments received from Engineers/Consultants (typically Lead or Senior), Project Inspectors, Construction Manager, or Project Manager. Public and client interface as part of daily duties. Independence increases as knowledge, skills, and abilities grow; work independently while seeking periodic guidance and direction. Supervisory: May supervise and coordinate the work of Construction Inspector I, Construction Inspector Trainees, and Co-ops/Interns.
