Description
Position: Food Security Worker
Department: Eskasoni Mental Health Services
Reports to: Food Security Coordinator
Status: Full-Time (37.5 hours per week) Unionized
About the Opportunity
Under the Eskasoni Mental Health Food security program, the Food Security Worker will play an integral role in advancing community food security by supporting the delivery of programs and initiatives that increase access to nutritious and affordable food. Reporting to the Food Security Coordinator, this position encompasses program operations, client support, education, and community collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the operation of food pantries, social supermarkets, and meal programs (sorting, stocking, distribution)
Ensure proper food handling and storage in accordance with food safety guidelines
Maintain accurate records of inventory, distribution, and client data
Support the delivery of workshops on nutrition, cooking, budgeting, and food resource management
Develop and distribute educational materials
Participate in outreach and community engagement activities
Build and maintain relationships with community partners
Support implementation of food security initiatives and programs
Qualifications
High school diploma (minimum required)
Post-secondary education is an asset
Knowledge of community resources and food assistance programs
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Experience
Experience working with vulnerable populations and/or food security programs preferred
Experience working with Indigenous populations
Cultural Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of community-based supports and services
Respect for Mi’kmaw culture, values, and community practices
Ability to speak/understand Mi’kmaq considered an asset
Additional Requirements
Valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check and clear Sexual Abuse Registry check required
Training in First Aid and Food Handlers Course (provided upon hire if outdated or needed)
