We help children stay safe, families remain together, and newcomers navigate life in New York City. While our doors are open to all, AAFSC has expertise in serving Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, Muslim, and South Asian communities.  </p><p><strong>JOB SUMMARY: </strong><br>The ESOL Instructor at AAFSC works within our Readiness Initiatives Program to provide limited English proficient adults with contextualized instruction that gives students the civic and English language skills to effectively participate in the English-speaking environment in which they live. The instructor fosters a classroom environment that offers participants the resources, opportunities and support needed to help them grow and achieve self-sufficiency. A successful person in this role is an experienced, creative, hard-working and dynamic ESOL instructor who has experience creating student-centered learning environments, using a communicative approach, and incorporating civic engagement, job readiness and technology in the classroom. A commitment to immigrant, refugee and low-income communities is essential for this role. </p><p></p><p><strong>DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: </strong></p><ul><li>Develop & write new lesson plans, or adapt existing lesson plans, to meet student needs and stated class objectives.</li><li>Provide instruction and facilitate classroom activities in line with stated class objectives. </li><li>Prepare students to take the Citizenship test and pass the interview.  </li><li>Build instructional activities around the four interdependent components of reading: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. </li><li>Provide a variety of instructional deliveries including individualized instruction, small group instruction, and whole class instruction. </li><li>Facilitate learning with textbooks, workbooks, lectures, computer based educational programs, audio/visual aids, hands-on activities, and use of tutors. </li><li>Assist students with the development of digital literacy skills and provide learning activities designed to enhance financial literacy skills. </li><li>Maintain accurate student attendance records. </li><li>Ensure all lessons and structured activities have clearly defined outcomes with measurable skill gains and/or learning goals for adult participants. </li><li>Maintain active repository of curricula that is made accessible and available on organizational servers. </li><li>In collaboration with Program Director and Associate Director, continuously evaluate and refine curricula and activity plans to ensure success for adult learners attending program. </li><li>Ensure all paperwork and documentation is completed in a timely manner. </li><li>Report any issues in the classroom (either with students or volunteers) immediately to supervisor. </li><li>Other duties and responsibilities </li><li>Participate in internal and external meetings and trainings as assigned. </li><li>Perform other duties assigned by Program Director.</li></ul><br><strong>BACKGROUND AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS </strong><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree required. </li><li>Teaching certification (TESLA, TESOL, CELTA, etc.) required. </li><li>BEST Plus certification required. </li><li>Ability to teach both remote online classes and in-person classes. </li><li>Experience with teaching beginner adult students, including Literacy Learners, required. </li><li>Excellent writing and editing skills; strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills. </li><li>Experience with teaching multi-levels in a single classroom. </li><li>Flexible with an open enrollment schedule </li><li>Openness to learning about the languages, cultures, and customs of the students to better serve them. </li><li>Must complete 18 hours of professional development training each year. </li><li>Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development, and implementation of structured programming for adult learners required. </li><li>Open to learning more about cultural responsiveness, trauma-informed education, and language instruction. </li><li>Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines. </li><li>Passion for AAFSC’s mission and vision. </li><li>Job contingent on pre-employment background check and fingerprint clearance. </li><li>U.S. Work Authorization required. </li></ul><p></p><p>We are an equal opportunity employer that values diversity at all levels.
