Position Summary The Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Cook to support food production for the K-HANDLE CKD Study. This role is responsible for preparing study meals according to established menus, recipes, and food safety procedures, while maintaining high standards of precision, organization and consistency required in a research setting. The position requires up to 35 hours per week for 12 months. Responsibilities Prepare and cook study-specific meals in accordance with standardized menus, recipes, portion sizes, and food safety protocols already developed for the project. Support weekly food production for research participants, ensuring meals are prepared accurately, consistently, and on schedule. Measure and portion ingredients and prepare foods precisely, using food scales and specified weights to meet study requirements. Label, package, store, and organize prepared foods appropriately to maintain food safety, traceability, and product quality. Monitor food storage conditions, including refrigeration and food organization, and ensure proper handling of ingredients and finished meals. Track inventory of ingredients, prepared meals, packaging supplies, and other kitchen materials; identify shortages and prepare weekly grocery or supply lists. Maintain clear production records and communicate regularly with the Research Coordinator regarding ingredient needs, menu planning, batch cooking schedules, and kitchen workflow. Assist with kitchen organization and cleanliness. Oversee and provide direction to student volunteers working in the kitchen, as needed. Monitor and record food temperatures as required to support safe food production and storage practices. Qualifications Minimum high school diploma Knowledge in food safety principles; Food Handler Certificate preferred. Alberta Food Safety Certificate accepted. Experience with commercial or institutional food production, meal preparation, and batch cooking. Familiarity with kitchen equipment, food thermometers, and food scales. Strong ability to follow written recipes, protocols, and standardized procedures with accuracy. Excellent attention to detail, particularly in weighing, measuring, portioning, labelling, and storage of food. Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage inventory, storage systems, and multiple production tasks efficiently. Good time management skills and the ability to prepare several meals per day within production timelines. Ability to work independently while maintaining regular communication with the research team.
