Description POSITION SUMMARY: Performs protective service work enforcing laws, patrolling assigned area, investigating criminal activity, serving civil papers, ensuring public safety, testifying in court, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Lieutenant. If selected to move forward in the recruitment process, the written and physical testing will be on Thursday, June 11th at 3:30pm. Any questions on the PRT requirements, contact Lt. Coleman in the Sheriff's Office at 715-381-4320. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned. On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle observing traffic law violations, suspicious activities or persons, and law and order disturbances; responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints. Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, and civil process papers as needed; and makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints. Enforces traffic laws; issues traffic citations; performs radar enforcement, traffic control, motorist assists, etc. Assists other law enforcement officers and agencies on various tasks. Operates computer to perform background checks, criminal histories, missing persons checks, etc. Assists with criminal investigations by preserving, recording and presenting evidence; interviews victims and witnesses; testifies in court. Prepares and maintains various records and files and prepares reports. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES This section details the essential competencies required to perform the job effectively, including a mix of technical knowledge, practical skills, and personal attributes. Ability to provide effective and credible testimony in a court of law. General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices and procedures. General knowledge of the County geography and location of important buildings. General knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office. Skill in the use of firearms, chemical agents, weapons of defense and the operation of a motor vehicle. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports. Ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public under stressful situations. Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. LANGUAGE SKILLS This section outlines the communication abilities necessary for effective performance. These skills reflect the need to interact with the public, colleagues, and other stakeholders in a clear, professional, and effective manner. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, with a wide range of individuals, including the public, colleagues, and supervisors. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives, exposure to vibration, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus, exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and work in or with traffic; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. car, business office, light traffic). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 60 College credits or an Associates/Technical degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field must be obtained by the end of your fifth year of employment per Wisconsin Administrative Code LES 2.01. CERTIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification (LESB) or eligibility for WI LESB. First Aid and CPR/AED Certification may be obtained within six (6) months of hire. Intoxilyzer and Sobriety Testing Certification may be obtained within six (6) months of hire. Valid driver's license Minimum age of 21 Ability to possess firearms No felony convictions (Wisconsin Statute § 165.85(4)) No domestic abuse convictions (LES 2.01 WI Administrative Code) Citizen of the United States (Wisconsin Statute § 66.0501) Must successfully pass the Wisconsin DOJ Physical Readiness Test with the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office.
