Overview
This position is located in Kings, Bay GA
Maintenance and Modernization has an opening for a highly motivated Non-Nuclear Field Test Engineer to support shipboard testing, troubleshooting, and technical execution of non-nuclear systems and components during submarine maintenance and overhaul periods.
Department 707 (D707) Non-Nuclear Repair & Construction Engineering team is a critical component of Electric Boat’s Maintenance & Modernization organization. D707 provides non-nuclear engineering support for submarine maintenance, modernization, alteration, and repair activities to ensure the delivery of mission-ready submarines to the fleet.
The Non-Nuclear Field Test Engineer candidate will provide deck-plate engineering support for maintenance and modernization activities involving submarine non-nuclear systems. This role includes authoring Technical Work Documents (TWDs), executing and supporting testing activities, resolving emergent shipboard issues, and ensuring work is performed in accordance with applicable specifications and quality requirements.
This position requires both shipboard and office-based work and demands a proactive, safety-focused, and deadline-driven approach.
The Non-Nuclear Field Test Engineer supports testing and troubleshooting of:
Submarine Non-Propulsion Electronic Systems (NPES), including fire control, navigation, sonar, instrumentation, and associated electronic systems
Hull, Mechanical & Electrical (HM&E) systems, including power distribution, control and indication systems, interior communications, fiber-optic data distribution, and electromechanical actuation
D707 Non-Nuclear Field Test Engineers routinely interface with Operations, Planning Yard, Design Engineering, Test organizations, Program Office personnel, and United States Navy (USN) stakeholders, including Supervisor of Shipbuilding Groton (SOSG), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), and submarine crews.
Key Responsibilities
Author and revise Technical Work Documents (TWDs) supporting non-nuclear maintenance and modernization activities
Provide shipboard technical direction and real-time troubleshooting support
Conduct and support system testing and validation efforts
Ensure compliance with shipbuilding specifications, USN maintenance requirements, and contractual obligations
Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering teams
Evaluate shipboard conditions and develop practical engineering solutions
Travel, overtime, and evening/weekend work may be required based on program needs .
Qualifications
Required:
High School Diploma or GED
2+ years of experience supporting USN submarine mechanical or electrical systems (non-nuclear), including testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, or operation
Experience using hand tools, torque wrenches, electrical test equipment, and precision measuring devices
Physically able to climb ladders and steep stairs, ascend/descend scaffolding, and access confined spaces aboard submarines
Preferred:
6+ years of experience supporting USN submarine mechanical or electrical systems (non-nuclear), including testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, or operation
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent experience)
Active DoD Secret Clearance
Experience supporting Special Emphasis Programs (e.g., SUBSAFE, Level I)
Previous qualifications as Navy Quality Assurance Inspector (QAI) or Quality Assurance Officer (QAO)
Experience testing and troubleshooting shipboard fiber-optic systems
DoD Secret Clearance
Skills
Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering fundamentals
Understanding of system integration between electrical and mechanical components
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting
